Which Switchgear Do You Need
Service entrance and main distribution below 600 V
Drawout low-voltage switchgear is built and tested to ANSI/UL 1066 with power circuit breakers that can be racked out and maintained; a switchboard is built to UL 891 with fixed or plug-in devices and costs less. If the bus has to stay energised while a device is serviced, the switchgear line is the one to shortlist.
Medium-voltage distribution in a constrained room
Metal-clad air-insulated lineups are the ANSI default and the easiest to service, but they take floor area and clearance. Gas-insulated and solid-insulated designs shrink the footprint and seal the primary parts against humidity and contamination, at a higher unit price and with a sealed pressure system to account for in the maintenance plan.
The project is written against SF6 phase-down
The EU F-gas regulation and several US state rules are closing on SF6 in new medium-voltage equipment, and every major OEM now ships a fluorinated-gas-free alternative using dry air, vacuum interruption, or a synthetic-air mixture. These carry their own type-test evidence and are not always dimensionally interchangeable with the SF6 unit they replace.
Arc flash is driving the design
Internal-arc classification describes what the enclosure does when a fault happens inside it: where the gas is vented, and how long the doors stay shut. It is a construction rating, not a protection setting, so it cannot be added later. Pair it with a reduced-energy let-through or maintenance-mode trip setting on the breaker. Several generators have to share one bus
Paralleling switchgear synchronises multiple generator sets onto a common bus and manages load sharing, load shed, and the transfer sequence. The decision is mostly about the control layer: engine-mounted controls handle small sets, while a dedicated paralleling lineup earns its cost once the plant has redundancy, utility paralleling, or a closed-transition return.
