What We Publish

Technical analysis for people who buy, finance, or operate power infrastructure: equipment selection and failure modes, procurement and lead-time strategy, interconnection and permitting policy, and data center energy economics. Pieces run long where the subject needs it, and they are judged on whether a practitioner learns something they could not get from a datasheet.

What We Do Not Publish

Vendor promotion, sponsored placement, link-building filler, and general-audience explainers. Contributors may work for OEMs, EPCs, or developers, but a submission that reads as marketing for the author's employer is declined.

Sourcing Requirements

Every factual claim needs a verifiable public source, cited as an inline prose link. Preferred primaries are FERC, EPA, NERC, EIA, DOE, grid operators, national laboratories, and OEM technical documentation. Anonymous sourcing and vendor whitepapers are not accepted as primary evidence. Full rules are on the methodology page.

How To Pitch

Format and Length

Most accepted pieces run between fifteen hundred and three thousand words. Length follows the argument: a lead-time analysis that needs three OEM queues compared will be longer than a focused piece on a single failure mode. Paragraphs stay short, subheadings are descriptive rather than clever, and tables are used where a comparison is genuinely multidimensional. Citations are inline prose links, never footnotes or superscripts.

What Review Looks Like

An accepted pitch is assigned an editor and passes a structured review before publication. Review checks that every quantitative claim resolves to a cited source, that internal links point at pages that exist, that no vendor is favoured without evidence, and that the piece does not restate a claim already published elsewhere on the site without adding to it. Feedback is specific and returned in one pass where possible.

Bylines and Rights

Contributors publish under their own name with a linked profile on the editorial team page, including role and area of expertise. Authors retain the right to republish after thirty days with a canonical link back. SecondWatt does not accept payment for placement and does not allow an employer to review a draft before publication.

Topics Currently Open

Transformer procurement and remaining-life assessment, medium voltage switchgear testing and maintenance practice, interconnection queue strategy under current FERC rulemaking, on-site generation economics for large loads, and fuel cell deployment experience at data center scale. Existing coverage is in articles and reports and across the equipment hubs; a pitch that extends or challenges a published piece is welcome.

How To Pitch

Send a two-paragraph outline: the claim the piece will make, and the sources that support it. Accepted pitches are assigned an editor, run through structured review, and publish with a named byline and a linked profile on the editorial team page. Recent work is in articles and reports.
